- Ted Vyvey of Encampment died Wednesday, July 14, 2010, in Laramie where he had lived in recent years to obtain medical care. He was 67 years old.
Ted was born Oct. 7, 1942. He was raised east of Encampment on the Wagner Ranch. He went to school in Encampment and graduated from Encampment High School in 1961. He was the only son of Carl and Evelyn Vyvey and after high school went to work with his father on the home ranch.
Ted always helped with brandings and cattle drives at the VX Ranch as well as his home place and at other ranches owned or managed by his friends and uncles. He could ride and rope with the best of them but always had compassion for his animals whether they were horses or cattle.
Beyond the ranch life, he was a brand inspector, a water commissioner and a school bus driver, driving the regular route for Encampment School and taking many activity trips through the 25 years he worked for the schools. Additionally, he was an active member of the Encampment-Riverside Lions Club and worked to put on the Woodchoppers Jamboree, serving as the rodeo chairman for several years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for more than 40 years and was Grand Master.
He devoted his entire life to the land, the cattle, and the people of Encampment and the valley. In addition to his jobs as rancher and as a brand inspector, in both the Upper North Platte River Valley and in Greybull, Wyo., he worked for the State of Wyoming Board of Control.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Valerie and Jim Remick, of Encampment; grandsons C. J. Remick of Encampment and Carl Remick of Casper and numerous other relatives.
A memorial service for Ted is planned Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Rick Martin Memorial Park in Riverside with Pastor Glenn Murray officiating. Music for the service is to be provided by Georgia Miller and Steve Moulton, with a cowboy poem by Chuck Larsen.
Pallbearers are to be Sam Verplancke, David Hammer, Ray Morris, Bob Blake, Billy Irvine, Win Condict, Monty Munroe, and Ray Vyvey. Honored friends are Larry and Carolyn Vyvey, Dixie Minear, Roxie Baldwin, Jack Gibson, Robin Blake, Dauna McBride, and Sharon and Ray Guthridge.
