- David Julius Serlo, 63, died peacefully Friday, June 25, 2010, at his son's home in Chapel Hill, N.C., after a courageous battle with cancer that spanned nearly 17 years. Serlo was born Nov. 21, 1946, in Jeanette. He was a 1964 of graduate of Jeanette High School and earned a bachelor of science and a master's degree in accounting from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He later went on to earn an Executive Master of Business Administration Degree from Loyola University of Maryland. Serlo is survived by his wife of 40 years, the former Martina Smutsky. He will forever be remembered by his three children, Adam and his wife, Asli, of Chapel Hill, N.C., Mark and his fiance, Haroula Drakes, of Chicago, Ill., and Katherine and her husband, Troy Thomason, of Orlando, Fla. He is also survived by his younger brother, John, his wife, Karen, and their two daughters, Nikki and Keiley. Serlo was preceded in death by his parents, Reva Dietrich Serlo and Julius Serlo. Serlo began his career as a National Credit Union Administration examiner and became very passionate about the credit union movement over his 13 years in the position. In 1983, he became the first full-time employee of Payment Systems for Credit Unions (PSCU), ultimately evolving that company to PSCU Financial Services, the nation's largest Credit Union Service Organization. Serlo served on the Board of Directors of The National Association of Credit Union Service Organizations, Credit Union Miracle Day, Inc., and numerous advisory councils of the industry. He has been recognized by his peers for leadership in the credit union industry and was awarded the Ernst & Young Florida Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2008. Serlo was also honored with the prestigious Distinguished Alumni Award from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, in 2009. Well known for his generosity and patriotism, Serlo actively supported numerous charitable foundations, including the Children's Miracle Network, the American Red Cross and other organizations that serve the underprivileged. He also led support for patriotic organizations, such as Colonial Williamsburg, that educate future generations about the unique requirements and responsibilities of our democratic system. A devoted husband, as well as a role model and hero to his three children, Serlo taught his children the importance of family values, education, respect for others, hard work and unconditional love. Serlo was also a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, in Temple Terrace, Fla., for more than 27 years. His faith and spiritual beliefs were strong sources of support for him, especially as he battled cancer. Serlo touched the lives of many people and will always be remembered for his passion, loyalty, generosity, respect of others and a "never give up" attitude. His legacy will forever live on through his family, friends and PSCU Financial Services.
