- James "Pen" Pendleton Waggener II, long-term resident of Fallsington, died peacefully on Friday, March 12, 2010. He was 88.
He and his late wife, Marjorie Waggener, were active members of the Fallsington Friends Meeting.
Born in Wichita Falls, Texas, to James P. and Ritter Waggener, he worked as an engineer at General Motors Institute in Detroit, Mich., after which he took a position at the Franklin Institute Research Labs in Philadelphia. Pen left the Institute to work as a career counselor in Philadelphia. He later worked, with the inventor, on the design of a unique speech recognition system, for which several patents were awarded. Pen worked until his death on the development of a computer-based educational system, which he believed would address the roots of global poverty and war by allowing every student to succeed in school and become fully educated.
Pen was preceded in death by both his wife of 65 years, Marjorie Waggener, and their son, James Pendleton Waggener III.
He is survived by his 2 daughters & sons-in-law, his sister & brother-in-law, several brothers and sisters-in-law; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at the Fallsington Friends Meeting House.
