- GLADSTONE '97 Lawrence T. Lavelle of Gladstone died at age 83 on Dec. 28, 2016. He was born in Gladstone on Dec. 29, 1932, to the late Lawrence J. and Stella (Cavill) Lavelle. He graduated from All Saints Catholic Grade School where he served as an Alter Boy. He graduated from Gladstone High School in 1951.
Larry (also known as "Pierre" to many of his friends and relatives) served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married the former Irene Roberts on Sept. 15, 1956. They remained married for nearly 59 years, until Irene's death in 2015.
Larry was employed by the Soo Line Railroad until his retirement. He was a member of the Gladstone American Legion Post #71 and a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Gladstone.
Larry enjoyed spending time at his camp. He also enjoyed hunting, metal detecting, and playing cards. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family. Larry had a great sense of humor and a knack for storytelling. He was also known as someone who would offer meaningful advice and guidance to those in need, and in this way, he helped many people over the years.
Survivors include sons Patrick (Tracey) Lavelle and Daniel (Jana) Lavelle, son-in-law Terry Harris, grandchildren Shannon (Adam) Cleven, Chelsea (Phil) Adams, Rachel Lavelle, Joshua Lavelle and Gabriel Lavelle, great-grandchildren Jacob, Ryan and Abby Cleven and Bowie Adams all of Green Bay.
Also surviving is a sister, Kathleen (James) LaCosse of Cornell, and sisters-in-law Kathleen (James) Grenfell of Gladstone and Mary Ann (David) Lavelle of Port Huron, Mich., along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife Irene Lavelle, daughter Mary Beth Harris, parents Lawrence J. and Stella Lavelle, step-mother Ellen Lavelle, brothers James and David Lavelle, sister Patricia Moberg, brothers-in-law Bill (Betty) and Bob (Barb) Roberts, and great-grandson Joseph Cleven.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Military rites will follow visiting hours, at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone, with the Gladstone American Legion August Mattson Post #71 presiding. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, at All Saints Church in Gladstone, with Rev. Fr. Jamie Ziminski officiating. Luncheon will follow in the All Saints Parish Hall. Larry will be laid to rest in the Fernwood Cemetery. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting with arrangements.
