Three firefighters died while battling a multiple-alarm fire in an abandoned building that formerly housed a tavern. Capt. Dominick LaTorre of Engine 12, Capt. Anthony V. Lardiere of Truck 4, and Firefighter Russell Schoemer of Truck 5 all perished when the structure suddenly collapsed and they were buried beneath tons of debris in the basement. Several other firefighters were injured. According to newspaper accounts, the blaze had been deliberately set by two teenage boys. |

NEWARK, N. J. CAP) - Three firemen were killed and three others.were injured Sunday night when a burning two-story building collapsed on them. Two 13-year-old youths were arrested on suspicion of setting the blaze, fire officials said. Two fire captains and the son of a career fireman were killed. One of the injured was a brother to one of the men killed. The men .were.part of a squad fighting the three-alarm fire in a vacant tavern in a rundown section in the city's Eastward. Some of the firemen were buried for up to two hours before,their mates, working in a driving rain with picks, shovels, and their bare hands,, could dig thorn out. The dead were identified as Capts. Victor Lardiere and Dominick Latorre and Fireman Russell Schoemer. Schbemer's brother, Richard, was one of three firemen admitted to Martland 'Hospital for superficial burns and bruises. They are the sons of Russell Schoemer Sr., who is on terminal leave from Newark Fire Department pending retirement. |
