- BIRMINGHAM Richard Emil "Pat" Cassels, age 90, died Monday, November 2, 2009 at his home. Memorial services will be Wednesday, November 4, at 1 p.m. at Rideouts Southern Heritage Chapel and Funeral Home, 475 Cahaba Valley Road in Pelham. The family will receive friends one hour before the service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bert James Casssels and Anna Christina Boma Cassels; his sisters, Mary Anna Cassels Hagman and Helen Louise Cassels Ramp; and brothers, William Beverage Cassels, James Joseph Cassels and Robert Edwin Cassels.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lois Benton Cassels; daughter, Barbara C. Klyce and son-in-law, Robert Klyce; son, Bill Cassels and daughter-in-law, Rebecca Cassels; and grandchildren, Derek Benton Cassels, Elizabeth Paige Cassels, and Anna Christine Cassels.
Mr. Cassels, a native of LaCrosse, Wis., lettered in football and basketball at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta (Fiji) Fraternity. He received a graduate degree in accounting from Mississippi State University in 1947. He retired from United States Steel Corp. in Fairfield after 25 years of service, and he served as controller of the Alabama Eye Foundation Hospital in Birmingham. He was a member of Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church.
Entering active duty in the US Army Air Corp in September 1942, Mr. Cassels served in campaigns in Tunisia, Sicily and Naples as the pilot of the B-25 medium bomber "Frisco Special." He received the Air Medal with eight oak leaf clusters for his service in World War II, and received his ninth cluster, as well as the Korean Service Medal and the UN Service Medal for his service in the Korean War in July 1952. He ended his service in the United Service States Air Force with the rank of captain. The family would like to especially thank all the caregivers who provided exceptional service.
